Filed Under General | Leave a Comment
If you have never made a public speech before, then it can be very daunting. The need for a keynote speech can arise in any event or situation. For example- at a business conference. If this is something required of you, then stop for a second. Enjoy a few tips on delivering a great speech and being a keynote speaker.
Be an expert in the topic at hand
Who wants to listen to someone waffle on about something they don’t know about? In all seriousness, know what you are talking about. If you are the best man at a wedding, you should really know all about the groom already. Even if you don’t get on with the wife, getting to know her for a good speech is a fair sacrifice. Again, if you are a business speaker for the day, know what you are talking about. If you have to give a speech on a product or service, learn every aspect of it before the event. Test the product or service for yourself. The internet is a good basis for research. You should find a website detailing the product or service. Youtube and Wikipedia are other good resources for information.
Know your audience
Audience interaction is key. A quick way to bore the audience to tears would be to simply stand and talk for over an hour. They won’t listen to you, and it’ll do your reputation no good. Thus don’t be one of those bad speakers. Do some research on the audience before you come to making the speech. What companies do they work for? Are there any shared interests? Can you talk to them about something of benefit. Get the audience participating and helping you along. Visual aids can work well. Even the dreaded Powerpoint presentations. Whether you choose to allow your audience to participate is a difficult one. What sort of audience are they? Invite the confident audience members on stage. Don’t do what some speakers do and pick the nervous members of the audience. We’ve all been there!
Work for your employer
Whether you are getting free drinks, or presenting an important speech to your clients, it’s important to work for them. If you need to sell to them, make sure you do it as best and non-aggressively as possible. If promoting a product, remember to give it your best go. Should you fail, don’t expect to be asked to give a speech again.
Practise makes perfect
Being unprepared is the worse thing you can be when giving a keynote speech. The most skilled keynote speakers will practise over and over again. How about using cue cards? Commit the speech to memory. If you get lost you then at least have your cue cards to go back to your speech. Whoever you have to deliver a speech to, we do wish you the best of luck in becoming one of the best motivational speakers.
