Claim Against Foreign Driver

You’re driving around and WHAM! You’re involved in a car accident and sustain damage to your vehicle or suffered injuries when the driver at fault is not British. What do you do? How do you claim against a foreign driver?
It can be difficult to get compensation for damage or injury from foreign drivers, and luckily I’ve never experienced this issue, but I came across the answer whilst reading a magazine and I thought it good to share with you. There is a system called the Green Card System that helps vehicles move easily over borders in Europe and protects the interests of victims of foreign-registered vehicles. The Green Card System is a European-wide system. If you have a claim against a foreign driver you should contact the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (or MIB -- no, not Men In Black!), as it acts as the UK’s Green Card System Bureau and supports motorists making claims after being involved in an accident with foreign vehicles in the UK. Call 01908 830001 or visit www.mib.org.uk . The MIB website has details of UK representatives of foreign insurers to whom you can claim.
The short article goes on to say if you can’t identify the insurer, or there isn’t a UK agent, the site has a step-by-step guide on how to make a Green Card Claim. Finally they say if you have a comprehensive insurance policy it may be quicker to claim under that policy than to make a claim under the Green Card Scheme. I would still make a claim though as most policies have some sort of excess to pay, and if the accident was not your fault, you can and should claim back the excess you’ve have to endure.
